If you do not see your question here, please call our office or enter your question into the contact us form below and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Yes- acupuncture is extremely safe. The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved acupuncture needles for use by licensed practitioners, requiring practitioners to follow strict safety guidelines while using only sterile, disposable, nontoxic needles. It is important that you see a licensed acupuncturist with the proper training to avoid injury. Other health professionals in some states are allowed to perform acupuncture with minimal training (anywhere from 100-300 hour courses). Acupuncturists receive close to 1000+ hours of training and clinical time working specifically with the safe application of acupuncture needles.

What Does Acupuncture Do?

Acupuncture helps to relieve symptoms and signs of many health problems. It can also uncover the underlying root cause(s) of those symptoms. The goal of this dynamic and integrated health care system is to activate the natural, self-healing abilities of the body. Acupuncture can also strengthen and support the body to prevent future illness and disease. Acupuncture is safe, natural, drug-free, and effective. Health is an inner resiliency that allows you to meet the demands of life. Being in a state of health helps you thrive in the face of environmental, physical, emotional, and mental stress. When Qi is balanced and flowing freely, the body’s natural self-healing abilities are activated enabling internal stability and harmony to occur. The body will flourish and true health and well-being can be achieved.

What If I’m Afraid Of Needles?

Fear of needles is a common concern surrounding acupuncture. Acupuncture needles are thin and flexible, about the size of a cat’s whisker. Once the needles are inserted, some patients may experience tingling or a sensation of movement at or near the needle sites. Endorphins are quickly activated leading to an increased sense of relaxation. Nelson is skilled at guiding new patients with the process of acupuncture, especially if a patient is fearful and apprehensive. His gentle, slow pace and easy-to-understand explanations help to minimize any fears a patient may have.

How Many Acupuncture Treatments Do I Need?

Each patient is different. After the initial consultation and assessment, the practitioner will discuss diagnosis and prognosis along with the most cost-effective options for treatment. Usually, 2 treatments a week for a month is ideal and most cost-effective. This allows for quick intervention and evaluation with regard to prognosis. Herbal therapy may be added for stubborn conditions and to achieve quicker positive results. It is not uncommon for conditions to resolve in as few as one or two treatments.

Is Acupuncture Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes! Acupuncture is a safe and effective way to alleviate many discomforts commonly associated with pregnancy.  In addition, acupuncture can be used to help promote more efficient labor. In fact, many midwives and obstetricians refer their pregnant patients for acupuncture.

Is Acupuncture Safe For Children?

Yes- children respond very well (and quickly) to acupuncture treatment. Depending on the child’s age and the condition being treated, different (smaller) needles and treatment modalities are used. Pediatric acupuncture is used to treat a variety of conditions including behavior problems, immune system conditions, growing aches and pains, digestion issues, asthma/ allergies, and bedwetting.

What Will My Acupuncturist Do?

During the initial exam, a full health history will be taken. Questions will be asked regarding symptoms, health, and lifestyle. Your acupuncturist also may check pulses and your tongue and may conduct a physical exam. This information is then organized to create a complete, accurate, and comprehensive diagnosis of where Qi has become blocked or unbalanced. After the interview process, you will receive an acupuncture treatment. Initial visits with your acupuncturist will last 1 hour and 20 minutes, additional visits will last 1 hour.
